Field Note: ‘Aventis’

2008 December 6

I came across this word today: “Aventis.”

I came across it in relation to a film of the same name, also known as: Si te dicen que caí or “If they tell you I fell” (in English).

The word “Aventis” is explained as meaning the name for stories that kids who would sit in circles in the rubble of post Spanish Civil War Catalonia would tell. These stories would have no beginning and no end, and would mix war stories, gossip, comics, fantasy and reality.

This just struck me as a fascinating concept. That children who survived the war would come up with this as an artistic form for their expression. I wonder what other equally fascinating artistic forms have been invented by children in such situations… I would hazard a guess that there are many.

* A field note in this Blog is an idea, concept, issue, that I think worthy of mention, but, that I have not yet expanded upon in any essay length form. But, I include here as a prelude to such a discussion.
